If you’ve been putting off getting your healthcare choices in order, now is the time! Who needs a Health Care Directive? Anyone over the age of 18. The 7th Annual Healthcare Decisions Day is a great opportunity to commit to getting a Health Care Directive – and, in most areas, you can get it done for free by availing yourself of any of the many volunteer programs in your area who hope you will stop by and let them assist you in taking care of this vitally important document.
Below is more on the 7th Annual Healthcare Decisions Day:
I’ve participated a couple of times in the past and plan to do so this year as well. It should tell you something about how important it is to have a Health Care Directive (HCD) if you take note of how many people volunteer around the country organizing these events. For those who still need a reminder about why a HCD is so important:
- It allows you to decide who will speak for you if you are no longer able to speak for yourself.
- It allows you to communicate your concerns and your wishes about your medical care and pain management if you can no longer speak for yourself, and allows you to talk about your spiritual wishes, donating your organs, and disposition of your remains, if you choose to address those issues.
- It legally documents your choices and allows you and the agent of your choice to ensure your wishes are followed.
I’m volunteering as an attorney along with many other attorneys and law students from around the Twin Cities. I’ll be participating at the Hamline University School of Law event – below is the basic information on where and when. Starts at 9am in the morning and goes to 7pm at night – you can stop by whenever your schedule allows. Volunteers will be pleased to assist you whenever you can stop by. And, you’ll walk out with your HCD – one of the most tools in your life planning.
